Chapter 1- The decision

The clouds were red in the May sunset, there was still half an hour until it would start to get dark. The playground of Domino high school was dotted with students- some eating candy bars and chatting to their friends, others playing basketball or other sports. Here and there some were even sitting and doing homework. There seemed to be no cause for alarm. It was a peacefull evening.

On the school roof, 2 teenage boys were standing together, side by side. One of them was Joey Wheeler. He had brown eyes and a mop of blond hair. You'll all remember that he had dueled at duelist kingdom to save his sister's eyesight. His parents had divorced years ago and he and his beloved sister were forced to live apart. At first Joey hadn't been able to accept this. For several years he wallowed in self pity. It wasn't until he met his oldest friend, Tristen, that he started to enjoy life again. But he never forgot his sister, he covered it up well. He didn't even tell his best friends untill Yugi saved his life on the boat to duelist kingdom.

Yugi was the one standing beside him. Yugi and Joey were best friends. Taia, their female friend, often described these two as being "like brothers." Yugi was very short for his age, even with his tall shock of multicoloured hair. Yugi was often bullied because he was a short stock. There was something very extradinary about Yugi. Fate had led him to find the millenium puzzle, an aincient egyption artifact he always wore round his neck. As soon as he had put the puzzle together he was fuzed with magical powers. Every time he played duel monsters the spirit of the millenium puzzle, Yami, would guide and help Yugi through the duel. Over time Yugi and Yami had become friends, even though Yami was a 5000 year old spirit. Yugi had made a wish on the millenium puzzle, he wished that he could have real friends. Then he met Joey and Tristen. But at first....

You: "Hey! We already know the complete biographies of the charecteres. We do watch every episode and all the repeats you know!"

Jessica: "Sorry, but I like to build my stories up. If you don't like it then leave!"

You get up to go.

Jessica: "Hey, I was just kidding! I'm getting to the good part, honest!"

You sit down again.

Jessica: "Can I continue now?"

You nod.

Good. Joey was satisfied that everything was ok that evening. He had been really happy since his sister finnaly got her operation to restore her eyesight. But Yugi seemed less at ease. That evening he seemed to be full of nervous tension.

Yugi: "I feel kinda strange this evening Joey, but I can't tell what it is."

Joey: "Just forget it and enjoy the evening Yuug. I tell you what, let's go to the burger bar. Taia might give us free milkshakes again."

Jessica: "Note, Taia works at the burger bar."

You: "We know!"

Jess: "Sorry."

Joey: "Unless you don't wanna."

Yugi: "No, it's ok. But if I feel anything i'll tell you. But it's not exactly danger i'm feeling. It's.... I don't know. Something....like thunder. I can't tell you what but it's worrying me. I'll go to the burger bar with you though."

Joey turned to leave but stopped, staring.

Joey: "Yuug, look at that." He was pointing to the sky. A star was shining brightly in the sky, in broad daylight. "It's weird that a star is shining in the daytime."

Suddenly Yugi shivered.

Yugi: "Oh, Joey! That star's where it comes from! I know now - something very bad! Some terrible thing, coming closer and closer." He bagan to wimper in fear.

Joey: "What sort of thing? What do you mean? I thought you said there was no danger!"

Yugi: "I don't know what it is, there isn't any danger here, at this moment. But it's coming, it's coming. Joey, look! The whole town! It's covered with blood!"

Joey: "Don't be stupid Yugi. Come on, stop talking like that, you're freaking me out!"

Yugi sat there trembling and crying as Joey tried to reasure him and find out what was wrong with him. But Yugi was clearly terrified. Yugi was growing more and more distressed.

Joey: "Yugi, you can't sit here crying. It's getting dark. We'd better get back home."

Yugi:"Back home! It'll come there, don't think it won't! I'm telling you Joey, the town's covered with blood..."

Joey: "Stop it Yuug, just chill out for a bit. Whatever the trouble is, it is time we got home."

Yugi, surrounded on all sides by the quite summer evening, was helpless and almost paralyzed with fear. Joey almost had to push him all the way back to the game shop.

The sun set. The wind turned colder, with a bit or rain, and in less than an hour it was dark. All colour had faded from the sky, except the star that had started Yugi's freak out. That evening most people, like Joey had, had looked at the star and thought it was weird. But then just carried on with what they were doing. That star shone brighter then any other star in the sky. But unknown to anyone on earth was that it wasn't a star, it was a meteorite.

Yami: "Yugi! Yugi, wake up! It's Yami. You'll hurt me in a minuit. Wake up!" He held him down. Yugi struggled and woke.

Yugi: "Oh, Yami! I was dreaming. It was horrible. You were there. We were standing on water, going down a great deep river, and then I realised we were on a boat. I saw that star in the sky. All our friends were there as well. But when I looked down, I saw the boat was made of bones. I screamed and Joey said "Swim, everybody swim" and then I was looking for him everywhere and I was trying to drag him out of a hole in the bank but he floated away down a dark tunnel of water. Sorry I hurt your ribs. Yami, the danger, the bad thing. It hasn't gone away. It's here all around us. Don't tell me to forget it and go back to sleep. We've got to get away before it's too late."

Yami: "Go away? From here you mean? From the town?"

Yugi: "Yes. Real soon. It doesn't matter where."

Yami: "Just you and me?"

Yugi: "No, everyone. The whole town. But they won't come. They'll say I'm crazy. And they'll be here when the bad thing comes. You have to listen to me Yami. Believe me, something very bad is close and we ought to go away."

It was evening again and Yugi had joined his friends, Joey, Taia and Tristen. They were hanging out in the park. They had listened carefully to Yugi's description of his dream. They had gone round the town trying to convince people that the town had to evacuate. But no one had listened to them.

Yugi: "Well, even if they didn't listen, at least no one can say afterwards that we didn't do our best to warn them."

Taia: "You're sure then, that there's really something we should be afraid of?"

Yugi: "Yes."

Joey was about to reply when they were approached by another of their school friends. It was Backura (The good one, the evil one doesn't appear in this story because I killed him.)

Yugi: "Hello Backura, what are you doing here?"

Backura: "I heard you're planning to leave the town, because there's a bad danger coming. Well i've decided to come with you."

Yugi: "Great. We'll be glad to have you with us."

Taia: "I think I'll come. I think you've persuaded me Yugi, you've never been wrong before."

Joey: "So, is we belive Yugi, that means that we think that no one at all should stay here. So between now and when we leave, we should persuade as many people as possible to join us."

Backura: "I think I know a few people who might consider coming. If I can talk them over, they'll be with me when I join you tonight. Yugi's convinced me. It's obvious that he's been sent some kind of message, and I believe in these things."

Tristen: "We've got to more people and meet again here, we can't wait any longer. The danger's coming closer all the time, whatever it is."

********************************************************************************************************************************************************

It was about 9:00 pm when Yugi and Joey met up and slipped quitly through the streets. With them was Yugi's cousouin, Violet (I made her up so you can't use her!) She was young and rather timid, and Yugi had spent a long time persuading her to join them. Violet had agreed rather hesitantly. She still felt extremerly nervous about what might happen once they left the town and had decided that the best way to avoid trouble would be to keep close to Yugi and do exactly what he said.

The 3 of them were waiting in the park when they heard a movement ahead. They looked up quickly.

Yugi: "Who's there? Taia? Tristen?"

Mokuba: "No, i'm Mokuba. I heard you were going to leave town tonight. If you are, I'll come with you."

Soon everyone else had arrived. Eventualy the party consisted of: Yugi, Joey, Taia, Tristen, Mokuba, Violet and Backura.

Yugi: "We should leave at once. The time's come."

Joey: "Come on, down to the river. Then we'll follow it out of town- that'll help us keep together."

Mokuba: "If you'll take my advice..."

Joey: "If we stay here any longer I won't be able to."

With Yugi beside him, he led the way out of the park and to the river bank. In less then a minuit the little band of kids had disappeared into the dim, moonlit night.

It was during the very early hours of the morning when they got to the forest. Straggling, catching up with one another, keeping more or less together, they had wandered through the open country. They were about 2 or 3 miles away from Domino city now. Yugi wasn't sure whether they were yet safely away from the city.

Yugi: "Joey, everyone seems ok so far. But I think Mokuba and Violet will have had as much as they can take soon."

From the moment they entered it the forest seemed full of noises. There was a smell of damp leaves and moss. Roosting birds rustled overhead, the night breeze stirred the leaves, here and there a dead twig fell. And there were more sinister, unidentified sounds, from further away; sounds of movement.

Soon everyone was close to exhaustion. They crept close together. Their progress grew slower. The moon was low now and the light, wherever it slanted through the trees, seemed thicker, older, and more yellow. From a thick pile of dead leves beneth a holly tree, Yugi looked down a narrow path, lined of either side with fern and sprouting fire-weed. The fern moved slightly in the breeze, but along the path there was nothing to be seen. What was in the bracken? What lay further round the bend? And what would happen if one of them went down that path? He turned to Joey beside him.

Yugi: "You'd better wait here, when I get to the bend I'll signal to you. But if I run into trouble, get the others away."

Joey: "No Yuug, I'll do it."

Without waiting for a reply from Yugi he ran into the open and down the path. He paused for a moment, staring around him, and then ran on to the bend. Beyond, the path was the same- empty in the darkening moonlight and leading gently downhill into the deep shadow of a grove of ilex trees. Joey whistled, and a few moments later Yugi was beside him.

Yugi: "That was great Joey. Taking risks for us, you never say die!"

Joey gave him a quick, friendly glance. It was warm praise and it cheered him up.

Taia: "Guys, we'll have to stop here. I know it's not a good place, but the half pints are pretty tired. They won't be able to go on if we don't rest."

The truth was that they were all tired. They had traveled as a group the whole time but had straggled a few times. They had been trying to keep up a steady pace but it had still been hard for the short ones. Since entering the forest they had become severly anxious. Violet sat trembling against a tree trunk. Her foot was in an awkward, unnatural position and she rubbed it misirably. Yugi wasn't any better off. He still looked cheerful, but very weary. Joey realised that they would be better off resting then stumbling along with no strength left. So they all lay close together, for warmth. In the soft ferns or against tree trunks. Some of the older ones talked for a while but the younger ones instantly drifted off to sleep.

Jess: "So what do you think? Not bad for a first chapter!"

You: "It's ok I guess."

Jess: "It is my first Yu-gi-oh fanfiction."

You: "So what's the next chapter going to be like?"

Jess: "It's might be better then this one, you'll have to read it! Please give me some reviews because i'd really like to know what you think! Gotta go now, the Simpsons is on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
