Now we have to go back to One year before Tyson returned to Haborosvk, to the night the house was destroyed. And as luck would have it, Kai, Kenny, Ray and Max didnt die that night! Heres what happened:
Max woke up with a start and looked around the small, dark room he shared with Kenny, Ray and Kai. They were all still asleep. He could hear bangs, explosions and screaming outside. Boris and the demolition boys were looking for them again and were wrecking the town. He got out of bed and went to the window. A horrible sight met his eyes.
The All starz, including his mother, were being dragged and forced into a hostage van by a group of Voiltaires hence men. They had obviously tried to stand up to them but failed. And now they were doing what they always did, taking them as prisoners.
Max knew he had to act quickly. He ran to his bedside table and grabbed his beyblade and launcher. He then returned to the window. He couldnt launch his blade till the All starz were in the van, he couldnt risk hurting them. He saw Michael punch one of the guys in the face. He was pushed into the van with the others. Now! Max launched his blade and it hit one of the guys in the arm. He clutched it in pain and yelled something to the other guys, who started getting into the van. Maxs blade punctured one of the tyres but they drove off before he could take out any more. He kicked himself inside for not being able to stop them.
He heard another noise outside and looked out again. He saw the White tiger team run out the house and chase after the van. Max watched them disappear into the dangerous, havoc crazed streets.
Kai: "Max, you fool! You shouldnt have hit one of them, now theyll come back and blow us up!"
Max: "Well I couldnt just let them take my mum and the All starz away!"
Kenny: "Come on guys, we have to get out of here before they come back."
Ray: "But what about the White tigers?"
Kai: "Well have to find them later, now hurry up!"
They quickly got dressed and grabbed a few essentials and their beyblades. Kai went up to the attic and bought down his shotgun (yeah, Kai has a gun now). Max grabbed his guitar and swung it onto his back (yeah, Max has a guitar now). Kenny grabbed his laptop, Dizzi. There was no way he would ever leave this behind. Ray grabbed some food saying they would be thankful for it later. They then quickly put on some coats, boots and Kennys hat (you know that hat he wore in Russia?) And were all set to go.
Kenny: "Wont it be dangerous out there in the streets? Voltaire's henchmen are everywhere!"
Kai: "Were not going out through the streets. Follow me." He led them back to their bedroom and opened the window.
Ray: "I see, were going along the rooftops."
Kai: "Exactly, theyll never catch us there. Listen carefully guys. Weve got to move fast but still be careful, its really slippery up there. Kenny, youd better hold onto the gun. And try not to make any noise, otherwise well never see any of the others again!"
Max and Kenny looked slightly discouraged by the last remark.
Ray: "Of coarse well see them again, but only if you do what Kai says."
Kai climbed out the window and onto the roof, then pulled the others up behind him. The houses on that side of the street were all joined together so they could easily climb over them to the end of the street. Kai went first up the first roof. Kenny followed on behind him, holding onto one end of Kais gun to prevent himself from slipping. Max followed after him, being pushed up from behind by Ray. When they reached the top of the triangle shaped rooftop they slid down the other side into the snow capped arch between the 2 houses. They rested for a few seconds then climbed up the next roof. And so they went on. Climbing, sliding, resting then climbing again over the rooftops. Knowing that one slip could make them fall to their deaths.
In 10 minutes they had nearly reached the end of the long row of houses. As they were sliding down yet another roof a huge explosion took them by surprise. Their house had been blown up, they had escaped just in time.
After reaching the end of the row of houses, they hid in a bombed, underground cellar that had been abandoned. There they managed to sleep until the next morning when cold and hunger woke them.
The next few days were the worst. Ray and Max wanted to find everyone else but Kai and Kenny said they should concentrate on finding some food and blankets. They split into 2 parties, Ray and Max searched the town for the others while Kai and Kenny went looking for food. But every night there was not one sight of any of the others and there was hardly any food or supplies left in the town.
Eventually both parties went out in search for food and in the couple of weeks that followed the situation got slightly better. Other countries were sending in food and blankets so they often got a meal from the soup kitchen that was set up or they scourged through garbage cans. Members of Voltaire's army were sent to patrol the town but otherwise there wouldnt be any more attacks. Voltaire must have presumed that Kai was dead and was now concentrating on ruling (or destroying) the world. Kai and his other team-mates stole from the guards a lot, but they never stole from people like them, only the guards deserved it.
Almost every night one of them returned to the cellar with more blankets. As they learnt, if youre living in and unheated cellar in the Russian winter, you can never have too many blankets!
As the months went by the weather got warmer and more pleasant so their spirits rose. It was clear that the cellar would be their home for quite some time so they cleaned it out as best they could and made a table and 4 chairs out of bits of wood. Ray and Kai stole some mattresses and they hung some curtains to keep out the worst of the draughts. Luckily, the entrance to the cellar was in such a position that it kept out most of the rain and cold. Kai used his gun to defend them and their shelter.
By the spring they had settled into the new way of life and started to make friends with the other homeless kids. By now they knew their way around the ruins and had adapted to being homeless.
But Kenny noticed that Max was still rather unhappy. He wandered what would cheer him up. Kai and Ray were always happy because they were always busy, looking for food or begging for money. Kenny and Max usually stayed in the cellar all day. Kenny then remembered Maxs guitar which he had salvaged from the house. He encouraged him to play songs and even make up his own. It cheered Max up greatly. It was then Kenny realised that he was the unhappy one with nothing to do all day. He sometimes got Dizzi out to work with her but there wasnt much to work on now. Kenny decided on another thing to keep him occupied, he started a school in the shelter for young orphaned kids.
He taught young children of about 5 years old and a little older. They huddled together in the cellar, 3 to a blanket, while Kenny taught them with Dizzis help. They didnt have any paper or writing stuff but they did the best they could. Although he had to turn some children away because the cellar wasnt big enough, Kenny found great pleasure in running the school and became much happier.
So it went on and on all through the spring. Ray and Kai went out to get food and stuff while Kenny taught the children in the cellar and Max sat outside in the ruins with his guitar playing and singing. Kenny dedicated the morning to lessons and the afternoons to play. Kenny would often tell the children stories and could keep them spell bound for hours. Max often played them songs before they left in the afternoon to play in the ruins. In the evening Ray and Kai returned to the cellar with food and anything else they had found. But there was one thing they never brought back which was the one thing they wanted the most, news of their friends.
