The Lost Phoenix

Prologue

Voltaire picked up what he needed and left to sit in the waiting horse pulled taxi. Perhaps it was his scary appearance, the busy roads to concentrate on or maybe the driver was merely tired but for whatever reason, no conversation was brought up for the entire journey. They eventually stopped outside a grand Russian mansion where floods of other guests had already arrived or were just arriving then.

The driver was paid and Voltaire wasted no time in entering the grand mansion and coming into a huge banquette hall. The tables had been pushed to the sides and now the entire floor was covered with dancing couples moving in time to whatever music the band played.

Voltaire, who was never one for dancing, took his place on a seat to the back of the hall and scanned the crowd. Soon his eyes came to rest on one in particular.

A young boy, no older then eight, cried out in protest as he was lifted up and swung around his fathers head but kept a huge grin on his face as he knew it was all in fun. As soon as the boy saw Voltaire, his eyes lit up and he broke away from his father to run and attach himself to Voltaire's legs for he was no higher then his waist yet.

"Hi grandpa," the young boy said excitedly, looking up at the elder with large shining eyes.

"Hello Kai," Voltaire said in reply, reaching down to ruffle the young boys already messy blue hair. "How are you tonight?"

"Fine," a young Kai smiled but then his face dropped. "Grandpa, do you really have to go back to Japan. Its so far away, why dont you just stay here? Ill miss you too much if you go," Kai pleaded.

"Im afraid I have to go Kai," Voltaire smiled, reaching down to pull his grandson onto his knee. "I have to leave first thing tomorrow morning. Thats why I have brought something tonight to give to you."

"For me?" Kai said with a twinge of confusion in his voice. "What is it?"

"This," Voltaire simply replied, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a green and blue beyblade. "My grandfather gave me this and he got it from his grandfather and...well you get the picture. Now, Im giving it to you Kai,"

"Thank you," Kai grinned back as he carefully took the beyblade from his grandfathers hands. "Whats this?" He asked when he noticed a bright red phoenix picture on the top of the beyblade.

"That is your bit beast," Voltaire smiled. "His name is Dranzer and I want you to take good care of him, understand?"

"I will," Kai smiled, attaching himself to his grandfather in a hug again. "Thank you grandpa."

Voltaire smiled down at the boy. He would miss him when he returned to Japan but at least now he knew that Kai would follow the family tradition and use Dranzer well in battle. He had a deep feeling inside his heart that the young boy would soon make the entire family very proud.

The peacefulness of the moment was suddenly shattered by a tall dark shadow descending upon the dance floor. The band slowed to a stop and the dancing couples seemed frozen to where they were on the floor, eyes wide with disbelief and fear.

The cause of this sudden freeze in enjoyment took his time in descending across the floor, causing some people to hastily shuffle out of the way to allow him to pass. He was a tall greasy looking man with pale, almost greenish grey skin and neither fat nor thin in the body. He was incased in a jet black robe which came down to his ankles. His hair was long, black and tied back in a pony tail style. His nose was big and squashed, his lips small and lopsided and his eyes were narrow twin pools of blackness. In his left hand, which seemed almost clawed with overgrown fingernails, he clutched a beyblade which was black like his robe.

"Its all right Kai," Voltaire whispered to his scared grandson and lifted the shaky boy off him to stand and face the black figure. Kai stood close behind him, clinging to the edges of his grandfathers magnificent deep red robe until he was pulled away by his mother.

"How dare you come here tonight," Voltaire spoke with an anger in his voice the Kai had never heard before. "Get out!"

"I see you gave the boy Dranzer," the dark person said, paying no attention to what Voltaire had just said. His voice sounded so icy and monstrous that Kai held onto his mother even tighter in fear and was relieved to feel her comforting arms around him.

"He will make better use for it then I could have," Voltaire replied, still keeping the firmness in his voice.

"Not if I can help it," the dark stranger spoke slowly while lifting his black beyblade to his launcher and holding it up with a tense hand. In one swift arm movement, the black beyblade was released and immediately set to work destroying every bit of furniture in sight. Guests started to panic and flee, tripping over each other in a desperate attempt to reach the doors.

"Black Dranzer, attack!" The person called. Out of the destructive beyblade shot a ray of black light before the biggest bird Kai had ever seem slowly rose out of its spinning prison. The bird was of a phoenix shape, a lot like Dranzer but pitch black in colour and its two red slit eyes burned like the hottest fires.

Kai felt his mother grab his hand and run as Black Dranzer rose up to the high ceiling, beating his large wings and causing it to come crashing down on the floor. All of a sudden, Kai felt his mothers hand come off him as he heard her scream over the sound of falling plaster. All he could see was dust and rubble, he had completely lost sight of both his parents. He tried to call out for them but choked heavily on the dust. The next thing he saw was his grandfather beside him, taking hold of his hand and running with him out of the now ruined dancing hall. They didnt stop when they broke out into the cold evening air but kept going, slipping over the frozen ground, both of their legs burning with pain and exhaustion but both refusing to stop.

"Kai," Voltaire called to his grandson as he ran. "Do you still have Dranzer?"

"Yes," was all Kai could gasp and held it up for his grandfather to see.

"Good, take good care of it," Voltaire smiled.

Kai was just about to reply but stopped when he felt something hard hit his legs as he was torn from his grandfathers hand and hit the ground. Stars danced in his vision before he heard a piercing shriek behind him and twisted his head to see Black Dranzer looming over him, ready to attack. Laughing, the dark figure stood beside it, grabbing onto Kais ankle and pulling the frightened boy towards him.

"Repulsant!" Kais grandfather called out angrily, re taking the boys hand. "Let him go!"

"Youre even more foolish then I thought Voltaire!" Repulsant laughed but was cut short when he heard a loud crack underneath him. Looking down, he saw the ground split beneath him to reveal ice cold water. Black Dranzer gave a loud shriek of protest as its beyblde fell and sank beneath the surface. Trying to keep himself from sinking, Repulsant momentarily let go of Kais ankle, allowing Voltaire to pull him to his feet and for the two to set off in a run again. Neither looked back as Repulsant spluttered and slashed in the freezing water before the waves went over his head.

Voltaire and Kai didnt stop running until they came to a nearby train station where a train going to Samara was just leaving. Voltaire jumped onto the back with ease but Kai, who was too exhausted from the long run, slipped off the edge and fell, hitting his head hard on the metal rail.

"KAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Voltaire could only watch his grandson fall as the train reached full speed. Jumping off now would only mean instant death. A tear slowly ran down his cheek as Kais blue hair disappeared into the crowd.
